Azulejos / 2019 / Drawing, acrylic paint, mixed techniques

Project carried out during the Erasmus student exchange at the Catolica Portuguesa University in Porto.

The main inspiration for the project were the tiles that decorate most buildings in Porto. Azulejos, the traditional, ornately decorated wall tiles that are a symbol of Portugal, tell different stories through their monochromatic, blue-and-white designs.
By combining 50 different 50x50 formats, I created a composition that depicted the stories that inspired my creativity during my six-month stay in Porto. These are small, everyday memories of the moods, objects, people meet on my journey and places I visited. Some of the paintings were created during a hitch-hiking trip around Portugal as well as during the secret rainbow gathering—my first encounter with complete isolation from civilisation.
